I had four babies many years ago. Now they are adults with their own babies! Yes! I am a proud grandmother now. The new mommies have to learn now how to raise their babies.
My children grew up with teethers, It is a great item to have! It can calm down a crying baby in seconds! I just loved it and my babies too!
Babies will always try to put things into their mouths at an early age, that’s why I believe the dummy is better than anything else in their mouths!
Well, two of my kids are mommies now, and it’s their turn now to buy teethers for their babies. And yes, They too love the idea! Years ago teethers were not fancy, but definitely very helpful! Today they come in many shapes, colors and sizes. More modern if you ask me. Today we going to talk about this “miracle” toy.
But, sometimes a baby needs more than a teether, especially if there is a fever or sore gums. Let’s look at that first.
What’s The Best Way To Soothe Sore Gums?
If your teething baby seems uncomfortable, consider these simple tips:
- Rub your baby’s gums. Use a clean finger or wet gauze to rub your baby’s gums. The pressure can ease your baby’s discomfort.
- Keep it cool. A cold or chilled spoon, not a frozen teething ring can be soothing on a baby’s gums. To avoid cavities, don’t dip these items in sugary substances.
- Try an over-the-counter remedy. If your baby is especially cranky, consider giving your little one over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others).
- Very important never give your baby any medication unless the doctor told you so!
- “According to Mayo Clinic.” In the meantime, a teether is a very helpful toy!
So, Why Do Babies Need Teethers?
Teethers are toys that a baby can put into their mouth when new teeth are developing. Babies do get some comfort and relief by chewing on toys, like teethers, when their teeth are growing in.
Tender gums might feel better when light pressure is applied. Tethers can also provide soothing coolness to the baby’s gums, that’s one of the reasons they love it.
There are many other reasons though why babies like to put teether toys in their mouth to chew on. It is not always for relief when their teeth are emerging. It is part of child development that babies will try to put things into their mouths at an early age.
When Should Babies Start Using Teethers?
Baby teethers are used to soothe babies’ gums when their teeth start coming in, at around 3 to 7 months of age. As babies begin teething, they might drool more and want to chew on things.
For some babies, teething is painless. Others may have brief periods of irritability, while some may seem cranky for weeks, with crying spells and disrupted sleeping and eating patterns.
Teething can be one of the least fun parts of early development for both you and your little one. Teethers provide a safe and clean chewing surface. A clean and sanitize teether are extremely important for your infant’s health and safety.
Chewing and biting is actually a necessary step in cutting teeth. It helps teeth come out correctly. Teething can be uncomfortable, but if your baby seems very fussy, talk to your doctor.
How Safe Are Teethers?
Because babies suck on teethers, the presence of potentially harmful chemicals on the surface is concerning, the researchers said. Find out if the teether is made from non-toxic paint.
Teethers are made of all different types of materials, like for example rubber, silicone, plastic, or wood. Many of them come in shapes easily for your baby to grip and hold.
You should always make sure that your baby will be able to hold and safely put the teether in their mouth.
If it is too big or too small it could be a safety hazard. Never leave your baby unattended with toys.
Teethers are affordable, it’s best to use the real toy, instead of a toy that looks similar but is not an original teether!
Warning! It can be dangerous to your baby, especially with toys that have smaller parts, that can fall of and be a choking hazard. Never buy used teethers.
Consider buying new teethers with each baby. Always make sure your baby doesn’t share a teether with another child for hygiene and health purposes.
Rubber teething rings are also good, but avoid ones with liquid inside because they may break or leak. Hygiene is the most important thing because your baby’s health depends on it! Let’s look at how to clean teethers:
How To Keep Your Baby’s Teethers Clean
Clean and sanitized teethers, reduce the spreading of germs. Always keep it in a safe place, away from kids and animals.
Silicone is highly heat resistant. You can sterilize them in boiling water or throw them in the dishwasher.
Just like bottles or nipples, you can boil your teething products. Grab a pot and make sure there is enough water to bring it to a boil.
Or bring a kettle of hot water to a boil and pour over the teethers. Let them boil for at least a few minutes. Disinfect the teethers by soaking them in a bowl of hot water and mild liquid dish detergent for a few minutes.
Then, in another bowl, mix together distilled white vinegar and warm water and soak the teething toys for 15 minutes before rinsing clean with cool water.
There Are Many Types Of Teethers
Let’s look at some of them:
Teething Rings, These teethers can come in plastic and filled with water. It soothes your baby’s tender gums and usually has a subtle texture. You can keep them in the refrigerator, but not too long, to avoid it from coming too hard, which is bad for the baby.
Teething Toys, Some teethers are designed for pain relief and play! Teething toys offer babies with sore gums something safe to chew on.
This is helpful because the gumming action offers counter pressure to the baby’s brand-new teeth that can be soothing and help alleviate pain.
Teething Jewelry, In December 2018, the F.D.A. issued a warning to parents and caregivers, cautioning that “necklaces, bracelets or any other jewelry marketed for relieving teething pain” could pose a strangulation or choking risk.
Although teething jewelry does exist, you should use it with caution. The beads of the jewelry may be made with various materials such as amber, wood, marble, or silicone.
Nuby Soothing Teething Mitten, The Teething Mitten features soft
